2012 Alfa Romeo 4C Concept in Geneva



At the 81st Geneva International Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo 4C Concept will make its debut, a compact "supercar" which represents the true essence of a sports car, according to the brand's values: performance, Italian style and technical excellence aimed at maximum driving pleasure in total safety.



The new concept presents the classic formula of the two-seater, rear-wheel drive coupé with its engine at the centre, a length of approximately 4 metres and a wheelbase of less than 2.4 metres: dimensions which serve both to emphasise the compact size of the car and to accentuate its agility. Distinguished by its graceful and clean external lines, the same principles are also applied to the inside, with the Concept's specific on-board design maintaining features and devices which directly reflect the car's sporting spirit.



On the Alfa Romeo 4C Concept technology and materials derived from the 8C Competizione find a home - carbon, aluminium, rear-wheel drive - and technology derived from Alfa Romeo models currently on sale: the 1750 turbo petrol engine with direct injection, the "Alfa TCT" twin dry clutch transmission and the Alfa DNA dynamic control selector.

Quite simply, this vehicle screams Alfa. Its sports car soul creates a unique driving sensation, both on the road and when racing, where its velocity and transverse acceleration become even more demanding.



Born from the experience acquired through the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and 8C Spider models, the new concept car shares its rear-wheel drive with the exclusive supercars as well as its philosophy based on achieving maximum driving pleasure and the proverbial Alfa Romeo road handling. This is an objective which the 8C Competizione and the 8C Spider pursue mainly through their increased power, while the Alfa Romeo 4C Concept follows the route of limited weight, made possible by extensive use of carbon, which also plays a structural role and guarantees exceptional agility with a weight/power ratio which is lower than 4 kg/HP. The chassis supports a body crafted completely from carbon, inside which there is space for the driver and passenger, while the rear frame structure and the crash boxes use aluminium extensively. The final result is a significant reduction in weight, limited to less than 850 kg, as well as the optimisation of the vehicle's centre of gravity, which gives the advantage of increased agility and drivability on the most challenging roads.



The name "4C Concept" is suggestive of the sports driving pleasure which only the spectacular "4 cylinder" 1750 Turbo Petrol engine which offers over 200 HP can bring. Already featured on a number of models in production, for example the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde, the engine boasts cutting-edge technical solutions such as direct injection, dual continuous variable valve timing, turbocharger and the revolutionary scavenging control system which eliminates turbo lag.



Located centrally in the rear of the vehicle, the engine in the Alfa Romeo 4C Concept ensures performance which matches or exceeds that of a 3 litre engine whilst still delivering the moderate fuel consumption which is typical of a compact, 4 cylinder engine. Coupled with the new automatic "Alfa TCT" twin dry clutch transmission, launched only a few months ago on the MiTo and which will soon be available on the Giulietta, the powerful 1750 Turbo petrol engine allows the 4C Concept to reach a top speed of over 250 km/h and to accelerate from 0 to 100km in under 5 seconds. The vehicle integrates its Alfa DNA technology perfectly, a true philosophy which brings together all of the on-board technology, making it enjoyable and customisable for the driver and further accentuating the "competitive" nature of the Concept compared to other vehicles currently on sale.



The Alfa Romeo 4C Concept has an extremely sophisticated suspension layout (high quadrilateral at the front, MacPherson at the rear) to ensure maximum agility and road handling. This solution, along with the rear-wheel drive and the extraordinary weight/power ratio, ensures Alfa Romeo driving pleasure, enhanced even further by the weight distribution (40% on the front axle and 60% on the rear axle). The Concept takes up the Brand's sporting tradition, taking us back to its origins, when agility and the weight/power ratio were the keys to a successful racing vehicle, and combining these aspects with the Alfa Romeos which take to the road every day.

This car is not simply an exercise in style created for the Motor Show; it will be on sale in 2012 and is set to reinforce Alfa Romeo's global growth.

Alfa Romeo in collaboration with stylish goods brand Italy Independent has release a special Alfa Romeo Brera model, the Alfa Romeo Brera Italia Independent Special Edition.



The Alfa Romeo Brera Italia Independent comes with a 18-inch matt black alloy wheels with a turbine design, an aluminium fuel cap, and red brake callipers help distinguish it from normal stock. The interior features a sports steering wheel covered in black leather with red stitching, aluminium pedals and footrest, as well as the optional Poltrona Frau leather upholstery in black with red stitching. Buyers can either specify the 2.2 JTS or the 3.2 V6 with 138kW (185bhp) and 194kW (260bhp) respectively. Drive selectors will either be a 6-speed manual or the Selespeed automatic Q-Tronic.

A famous Italian automobile engineer Giuseppe Merosi who worked for Alfa Romeo (then named A.L.F.A.) in the beginning of the previous century, the prototype presented by Marco Procaccini from MPcardesign is a four-seater sports coupe designed to feature a much missed by Alfa Romeo fans, rear-wheel drive layout.



The styling of the Giuseppe Merosi has a similar feel to Marco's previous work, the Vittorio Jano, combining hard edges with curved surfaces and a pronounced Alfa Romeo grille. According to the designer, the car would measure around 4,300mm in length, 1,810mm in width and 1,320mm in height.

INTRODUCTION:TZ3 Corsa is based on a mono shell carbon fibre tubular chassis, coupled with a tubular frame and a lightweight aluminium body. It boasts Technical Partners such as OMP and Pirelli.



HIGHLIGHTS:The TZ3 Corsa is not a design exercise. It does not take inspiration only from the 90 year collaboration between the two brands, neither only from the Milanese conjunction between Alfa Romeo and Zagato. The TZ3 Corsa is a race car, honouring 100 years of races and victories across the whole 20th century.



SPECIFICATIONS:



* The engine used for the TZ3 Corsa is an earlier version of the quad-cam V8 found in Alfa Romeo's 8C Competizione. Originally used in the Maserati GT and Spyder models, the engine displaces just over 4.2 litre. In the current trim, the all-alloy V8 is good for a hefty 420 bhp. This power is transferred to the rear wheels through a sequential six-speed gearbox. Pirelli has provided custom slick tires to fit the 18 inch wheels.

* The lightweight mechanical package is clothed in a carefully crafted aluminium body. The design has clearly been inspired by the TZ with its low profile, long nose and cut-off tail. The paint used for the car is identical to the red found on the original. Also typically TZ is the blacked out tail section. To honour Alfa Romeo the car sports big stickers with company's badge on the sides and nose as well as Autodelta badges on the A-panels.



DESIGN:Even the grandiose Quadrifoglio Verde was placed on the bodies of Zagatos of the Alfa Corse team numerous times. Among the most glorious moments is the victory of the Formula 1 championship of Juan Manuel Fangio, aboard his Alfa Romeo 159 bodied by Zagato, as well as the victorious Alfa Romeo 3000 CM bodied in 3 samples by Zagato.

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione designed and developed at the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is based on Maserati mechanics, but features unmistakeable Alfa Romeo styling. The '8C Competizione' name-plate is a reference to Alfa Romeo's rich motor-racing history. Making sure it handles as well as it looks, Alfa have drastically cut weight of the vehicle with the extensive use of carbon-fibre (the body and some other elements, like seat structure).Engine specifications on the prototype. The Engine Type of Alfa Romeo 8C is V8. The car having displacement of cu in (cc): 286 (4691). The Power of the car is bhp (kW) @ RPM: 450(336) / 7000 .The Torque is Nm @ RPM: 470 / 4750 having redline: 7500 rpm.

Originally unveiled as a concept car in 2004, Alfa have confirmed that the model will go into production in 2007 as a limited edition model, although that has yet to be confirmed.The planned debut of the production version is for the Paris show in late September so keep your eyes peeled and remember to check back for full production details shortly.

Designed with the intention of giving the venerable Italian performance car company a sports car designed to compete with Ferrari and Lamborghini, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is an impressive feat of automotive engineering, while also maintaining the classic Alfa looks and performance.

Under its hood is a 90-degree, cross-plane 4.7-liter V8 assembled by Ferrari that features wet sump lubrication and has 444 horsepower from the factory, and runs 0-60 in only 4.2 seconds. With styling harkening back to the days of the Alfa Romeo Duetto convertible, right down to the triangular grille, the 8C is a gorgeous car, worthy of all the design awards and acclaim it has received. Only 500 8C Competizione coupes were ever built, but what’s even rarer is the one police version available in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.

Alfa Romeo MiTo by NOVITEC

Novitec has unveiled their extensive line of performance accessories for Alfa Romeo's new MiTo hatchback.

Cars equipped with the 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine can be outfitted with Novitec's Powerjet 2 control module which boosts the engine's output from 155 hp (114 kW) to 186 hp (137 kW). Thanks to the extra 31 hp (23 kW), the modified MiTo runs from 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds which is a 0.7 second improvement over stock models.

Given the importance of diesel engines, Novitec is also introducing a Powerrail 5 control module which can be outfitted to 1.3 JTD and the 1.6 JTD. The module allows 1.3 JTD models to boast an extra 20 hp (14.9 kW) while the 1.6 JTD gains 24 hp (17.7 kW).

For owners wanting to "butch up" the MiTo's cute styling, the company offers an aerodynamic styling package that features a revised front bumper, aggressive side skirts, a roof-mounted spoiler, and an integrated rear diffuser. Other styling options include a sport exhaust with up to four tailpipes, 18-inch wheels in either silver or matte black, and an adjustable coil-over suspension that reduces the MiTo's ride height by 35 to 65 millimeters.

Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C

With teaser images and design sketches released a few days ago, Autodelta has quickly followed up to keep the media momentum going with a detailed release on the tuning program for the Alfa 159 JTS. After receiving special accoutrement according to Autodelta's J-Series designation plus the addition of a supercharger, the vehicle is renamed to Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C.

Via Rotrex supercharger unit, redesigned aluminum intake manifold, NGK Iridium spark plugs and a remapped ECU, the 2.2-litre unit’s maximum power from the standard 185bhp gets raised to 245 bhp, an increase of 60 bhp. Meanwhile, peak torque is raised from 230 Nm to 290Nm, giving the vibrant sports saloon an extra 60 Nm of torque.

Autodelta has finally revealed images of the final body kit, which takes on a different styling direction away from the recent J5 and J6 models. Focusing on aerodynamic demands as well as increasing airflow into the engine bay, the result is a tasteful body kit that includes a front splitter, rear apron and side skirts, with the front and rear apron sections designed to fit the standard bumpers of the production Alfa 159.

The Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C will become the third member of the exclusive bespoke J-series range, joining the Brera J5 3.2 C and Spider J6 3.2 C in the Autodelta line-up when the high performance sports saloon’s order book opens on July 1st. 18 months of intensive research and development and Autodelta is proud to present this new car. Just like the other two now-established members of the J-series range, the integral theme of the Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C is to continue a long standing tradition of applying forced induction principles to develop nothing less than the very ultimate expression of high performance motoring. The Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C once again makes strides across the sphere of engineering excellence, and applies the results of an intensive 18 month research and development programme, led by Head of R&D Sergio Truzzi, to Alfa Romeo’s advanced direct injection JTS, making us the only company in the world to develop a forced induction solution for this power unit.

With the commercialisation of the supercharged Alfa 159 2.2 JTS we have taken a dual approach, offering two solutions to satisfy all demands. The excellent all-round capabilities of the Alfa 159 architecture blossom into life when harnessed to our new supercharging upgrade. As such we are offering the 159 2.2 C supercharged package at this level, commercialised at a highly competitive price, and for the many customers who will desire to maximise the dynamics and performance of the car, we have developed the usual enhancements – to the driveable edge - in every area, which will be offered as the J4 2.2 C option. Thus the driver has two choices; he can experience full Autodelta performance wrought to the 159 at an affordable price, or take his car to the ultimate limit in every department by choosing the full range of options that suit his driving requirements. As usual though each Autodelta car will be built uniquely, with every customer’s individual demands met and exceeded by our engineers – a challenge we always thrive on, and never fail to meet. Although the J4’s 0-100 km/h sprint is more rapid now, one of its more capable abilities of this sports saloon is the in-gear acceleration and flexibility which will impress those who get behind the wheel.

What we have created is a car to satisfy even the most demanding of drivers, a car that simply immerses you in its stunning dynamic capabilities, and that allows you to experience everything that Alfa Romeo has built its historic brand values on. Alfa Romeo’s history is littered with fabulous, ground breaking sports cars that have reshaped automotive thinking time and time again. As such when seeking inspiration the possibilities are virtually unlimited for our team. However for with this project one car stood out especially, and so with the 159 J4 2.2 project Autodelta really wanted to capture the modern day spirit of the Alfa 156 GTA, one of the most revered ‘hot saloons’ of the decade, and a sports car that we have enjoyed rewarding success in tuning. This evocative car was a benchmark for us, however seeking more refined comfort and improved, updated dynamic behaviour.

Supercharging Alfa Romeo tradition and a offers the ultimate performance solution

Under the sleek, swaged bonnet of the Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C beats the muscular heart of this powerhouse: a supercharged version of Alfa Romeo’s impressive 2.2 JTS direct injection petrol engine, the first production application of forced induction to this robust engine. The incorporation of the Rotrex C30-74 supercharger and a specifically-developed bespoke system boosts the 2.2-litre unit’s maximum power from the standard 185bhp up to 245 bhp, an increase of 60 bhp. Meanwhile, peak torque is raised from 230 Nm to 290Nm, giving the vibrant sports saloon an extra 60 Nm of torque.

Supercharging the 2.2 JTS engine and evolving the 159 J4 2.2 C package to perfection has been a long-term project for Autodelta, running alongside the development programmes to realise the J5 and J6. Autodelta’s engineering team was able to build on valuable experience gained when it became the first company in the world to apply forced induction to Alfa Romeo’s 2.0 JTS unit, as used in the 156 and GT models; and although it is an all-new unit in the Alfa 159, many of the important lessons learnt, and technical knowledge gained, were carried forward to the 2.2 JTS project.

Redesigned intake system – to improve response and driveability

The 159 J4 2.2 C features a completely new aluminium inlet manifold as the factory OE plastic unit isn’t able to operate with the 0.65 bar boost level which the Rotrex C30-74 unit produces. The new inlet manifold design, now with a reduced volume, was also a critical component to increase the speed of response. Changes to the inlet and exhaust camshaft variator control strategy had to be evolved to generate more continuous torque and improve driveability.

NGK Iridium IX – applying the latest ignition technology to improve combustion efficiency

Autodelta engineers’ have adopted cutting-edge NGK Iridium IX spark plugs as OE for the 2.2 C for the all round advancements they offer and specifically because a colder heat range spark plug was necessary. Recent fabrication advances have allowed Iridium, a very hard precious metal, to be incorporated into the construction of spark plugs through the use of laser welding technology. Iridium has a melting point of 2450 degrees, considerably higher than platinum, and its strength is approximately 8 times of platinum offering considerable advantage over the plugs used as OE in the JTS engines while the more efficient spark optimises the ignition/combustion process, leading to improved fuel economy, increased power and acceleration and improved throttle response. The properties of Iridium mean that a much smaller electrode tip can be used, allowing a reduction in ‘spark jump’ voltage, and thus improving and reducing strain on the ignition system. NGK found minimal degradation of the Iridium IX occurs during its user life and extensive testing by Autodelta’s engineers within the specific scenario of the J4 2.2 C project also found this to be the case and we are happy that there is no measurable drop off in performance up to 12,000 miles, the use life that both NGK and Autodelta will recommend.

ECU – pumping up the electronic ‘heart’ of the car

Throughout the J4 development process one of the key factors was the programming of the ECU (Engine Control Unit), and more than twenty five different files were written and thoroughly tested during the process. Control of the Lambda as well as continuous cam variator characteristics were optimised to improve driveability and throttle behaviour. All the safety perimeters managed by the ECU to avoid any possible engine damage which are in default place had to be in full operation and revised to a more critical level. The ECU will operate in safety mode once it detects an error in the operating system and avoids any possible damage in the engine internals by going into safety mode which allows the car to be driven slowly to a dealer for diagnosis. As with the J5 and J6, it was very important to factor in the reliability and safety of the 2.2 JTS engine. Our engineers’ programming skills allowed the engine ECU set up to be optimised and maintained to continue reliable performance even in extreme conditions. The optimised engine ECU and all other linked ECU’s are also in line with EOBD2 actual diagnostic rules, and can be tested with normal tools available at dealer workshops and other universal testers.

Limited slip differential: key component to any Autodelta product

Autodelta first introduced a limited slip differential (LSD) working on the front wheels with the 147 3.7 GTA AM model almost half a decade ago; and the experienced gained from this now iconic Autodelta model has been passed on to the J4 project; as the new model now has a mechanical LSD. This LSD also importantly contributes to safer driving, allowing safer acceleration and cornering, even when there are drastically different grips levels under at each tyre. And at the same time we fulfil our mission to further improve the driver’s experience.

Enhancing platform dynamics to complement the power increase

The chassis dynamics have been re-worked to provide optimum handling and ability to use the additional power without any form of compromise, incorporating all-new dampers and springs. The J4 2.2 C draws from the experience gained during the realisation of the J5 3.2 C and J6 3.2 C, which share similar platforms. With carefully chosen damper and spring rates and with new geometry settings to suit the character of the new Limited Slip Differential the driver has extra confidence to exploit the full power delivered by the Rotrex supercharger. The development of these J5 and J6 projects involved demanding running on race tracks such as Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps and the NĂĽrburgring. The fully adjustable coil over suspension set-up allows for height adjustment as well as bound and rebound adjustment to enable the driver to fine tune the car for any occasion.

Evolution to optimise the braking window

The J4 2.2 C features uprated brake discs, which are additionally perforated at the front and rear, and new special compounds brake pads. These combine to improve all-round braking performance, allowing the discs and pads to operate during the most demanding of driving scenarios, to much higher temperatures, and to offer a greatly improved braking window.

Exuding the legendary Alfa Romeo ‘sound’

When an Alfa Romeo drives past the bystander can recognise its heritage even if their eyes are shut, so integral a part of the brand’s long tradition is the sound that its racy engines emit. Autodelta always adhere to this Alfa Romeo tradition and getting the right exhaust note is fundamental. The J4 2.2 C’s exhaust system, with its stainless steel silencers and Autodelta ‘trademark’ quad oval tail pipe exits, has been designed to enhance the engine’s sound. The result is a cacophony of music to the ears of the ‘Alfisti’.

No compromise in the search for optimal grip

Developing perfect road adhesion is another critical component in the J4 project. Thankfully Autodelta can turn to its tyre partner Dunlop to seamlessly undertake this task, and draw on an intensive development programme for the J5 and J6. After an evaluation process carried out at the Dunlop Development Centre in Hanau, Germany, in conjunction with Autodelta, the latest Dunlop ultra high performance pattern SP Sport Maxx GT compound was selected, and the J4 2.2 C will signify the first time that this new 245/35 ZR19 XL tyre has been applied to a production vehicle, signifying the high regard that the leading global tyre manufacturer holds for Autodelta. This tyre will enter production in August 2008.

The new compound of the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT also importantly pushes forward the environmental credentials of the tyre range. The tyre will feature a combined silica/black carbon compound. The silica comprises of the latest technology high dispersion silica combined with state-of-the-art functionalised polymers and traction resin. The black carbon is a special type derived from the DTM racing tyres. Aromatic oil free assures that the tyres will even comply with all foreseen new environmental regulations beyond 31.12.2009. This new pattern on the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT, as applied to the Autodelta J4 2.2 C, offers all of Dunlop’s highly regarded “feel the road - touch technology”: Multi-Radius Tread technology, which provides highly effective pressure deployment in the contact patch combined with a smoother transition from straight line to curve; flatter tread profile, with about 8 % bigger contact patch, in order to achieve higher stability and steering precision combined with more grip; and specific bead seat system providing a tight link between tyre and rim essential for enhanced road feedback.

Advanced technology wheels are fundamental to overall weight saving

The Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT tyres will be fitted to wheels supplied by OZ Wheels. OZ Wheels are an Official Technical Partner of Autodelta and all our bespoke models use wheels which have been developed by OZ for the specific requirements. For the J4 2.2 C we chose – in conjunction with OZ – the 19-in Botticelli HLT which is manufactured using cutting-edge flow forming technology. The result is a ground-breaking wheel that is up to 40 percent lighter than alternatives. It offers a drastic improvement in power/weight ratio, a reduction in unsprung mass and in the braking performance window; and faster acceleration.

The Botticelli HLT 19-inch wheel from OZ has been highly successful and is officially approved by the Renault F1 team. A ground breaking new process in wheel development, it offers excellent technical features, that result a lower weight than for wheels cast in forged aluminium. The reduction is evenly distributed on each wheel, improving unsprung weight. It thus emphasises the effect of a design directly derived from experience in competitions in which the weight plays an important role in both performances and safety. Constructed according to Flow Forming Technology, the Botticelli 19” has very similar mechanical characteristics to those of a forged wheel, confirming the attainment of two very important goals: weight reduction and firmness.

Weight saving - integral to the development programme

Saving weight is always at the forefront of our engineers’ minds and each new component is designed to offset weight. The alloy bodied Rotrex supercharger weighs just 7 kgs and the whole system features lightweight components throughout: the intercooler and inlet manifold are both aluminium. The aerodynamic kit is developed to be ultra-light without compromising toughness and durability, while significant weight is saved by the OZ Wheels. Further kilogrammes are chipped away by the new exhaust system and suspension components. Thus, although the J4 features a new supercharger system, the J4 is an overall 5 kg lighter than the standard production Alfa 159 2.2 JTS.

Styling – motorsport derived aerodynamics blended with Autodelta unique DNA

The styling aspect takes on an important new direction compared to the recent J5 and J6 models. The project, as is usual, focused on aerodynamic demands coupled with the requirements of the greater airflow into the engine bay. The result is a sports accessory kit that includes front splitter, rear apron and side skirts, with the front and rear apron sections designed to fit the standard bumpers of the production Alfa 159.

The Alfa 159 presents a much loved form and our design process had to complement this superb work from Giorgetto Giugiaro, building on the foundations that the legendary designer had styled.

As is historically typical with Alfa Romeo production cars, design inspiration follows the latest trends of aerodynamics in motorsport. For this approach our designers underlined the historic Autodelta philosophy of “today’s racing car for the road tomorrow”. The inspiration from motorsport concludes with the integration of “flicks” on either side of the splitter. The form of the flicks was integrated in a manner that suited the styling of the Alfa 159, closely following the lines flowing from the traditional Alfa Romeo grille. The result is a dynamic and thrusting stance that also emphasises the engineering applied to the suspension and braking characteristics of the Autodelta J4 model. The integration of the flicks as a spoiler also refers to historical Alfa Romeo models that used dominant front spoiler treatment in motorsport, such as the Autodelta Montreal and the Alfetta GTV8. The expression which is gained from the aerodynamic treatment can also be compared to the “eyebrows” above the headlights of the Giulia Berlina – a car which was “designed by the wind” and represented the backbone for the original Autodelta models of the 1960s.

At the rear we see a continuation of the diffuser style first seen on the Autodelta 147 GTA AM, and now a feature of all Autodelta models. The result is a logical evolution, playing with a contrast between subtle details and a freshly defined diffuser.

Both the front and rear skirts are visually joined in the centre of the car by specifically designed side skirts. The skirts continue the lines starting from the front splitter and bridge them to their endpoint at the exhaust terminals on the rear apron. This is a logical and graphically strong solution, which has resulted in a clear visual connection between the individual components of the J4 styling package. The side skirts closely follow the form introduced on the Autodelta Brera J5 MY2008, and also evolve the typical Alfa Romeo side skirt design that was first used on the Alfa 75 Turbo touring models.

Autodelta’s strength lies in having a close working relationship with its official partners, who assist in the Research & Development programme of each bespoke mode in their specialist field, thus guaranteeing maximum leverage in the pursuit of optimum performance within each technical area. The J4 2.2 C is no different and key partners include Dunlop (tyres), OZ (wheels), Rotrex (superchargers) and KesselsGranger Design Works (styling). Meanwhile, Mangoletsi, the UK’s largest and longest–established authorised Alfa Romeo dealership, is ‘Official Supplier’ of the cars for our Research & Development programme.

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider

For those who thought that Alfa Romeo’s irresistible 8C Competizione couldn’t get any sexier, the company has decided to release a Spider version which will also be produced in a limited run of only 500 units. The new model will get a classic fabric soft top which will operate electronically from a button on the dashboard.

There are some styling tweaks which differentiate the Spider from its coupe sister but essentially it’s a stock 8C Compitizione, sans roof. Alfa have said that they optimised some of the external styling elements, like wing mirrors, using computer models and tests in wind tunnels etc.

However, there's no word on how the car has been modified to deal with the loss of structure due to the roof being chopped off, which always affects performance and handling. The engine and gearbox are identical to the units used in the Coupe.

Alfa 8C Spider, a global preview

Debuting at Geneva showroom is the captivating Alfa 8C Spider. Like the Alfa 8C Competizione, the Gran Turismo which received resounding global praise; the new “discovery” will be produced in a limited edition run of 500.


Elaborated by the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, the new car re-affirms the brand's excellence in this sector, as shown by some Spider's being regarded among the most beautiful cars in global automotive history. Cars such as the Giulietta Spider from the 50's or the legendary Duetto made famous by “The Graduate” from 1967 with a young Dustin Hoffman. Today, it's the Alfa 8C Spider's turn to take centre stage and project into the future the values of technology and emotion which belong to the Alfa Romeo legacy.


Obviously, the new vehicle inherits all the winning features of the Coupè version. Starting with the two “sport seats” setup and the fascinating exterior lines, which characterized by sculpted and finely designed bodywork, “dress” the automotive and mechanical excellence of the model.


In detail, the marked dynamics of the vehicle are highlighted by the horizontal groove “built” into the bonnet at wheel level. The oversize wheels and powerful “muscles” of the rear mudguard accentuate the personality and force of the model, without diminishing the elegance of those fluid lines. Instead they highlight the formal beauty of the singular external features: the “teardrop” fog lights set like a precious jewel in the front mudguard, the front Led lights, a synthesis of technology and rationality, and the essential door handle.


Furthermore, in the front we can find the characteristic Alfa Romeo stylings, with a new interpretaion of the “whiskers” and shield. Without forgetting, that this innovative range anticipates the elements and proportions of the future Alfa Romeo cars, always with complete respect for the historical legacy of the brand.


It's worth underlining that to reach these top levels of areo-dynamic efficiency, solutions which don't limit themselves to the design of the form have been adopted on the Alfa 8C Spider. All the surfaces and profiles of the uprights and windows, together with the form and positioning of the rear-view mirrors, have been optimized using computer models and tests in wind tunnels and real-life environments. As a result, air flows round the vehicle following it's natural path, unhampered by corners and irregularities. The end result is a negative LC (lift coefficient) which like competition vehicles, contributes to stability at high speeds.


But the peculiarity of this vehicle, is the hooded top fitted with electro-hydraulic automatic control (controllable via a button on the dashboard). The hooded top of the Alfa 8C Spider is composed of two overlapping sheets: the external one is made with a multi-thread textile which can withstand the elements, whilst the interior has high sound-proofing qualities. Furthermore, the hooded roof-top, available in various colours, has been perfected aesthetically, aerodynamically and for acoustic comfort. It has also been perfected from a functional point of view, with specially developed film-reels to render more agile, rapid and secure any explanations of the functioning.
In the interior, the Alfa 8C Spider guarantees a sophisticated environment, thanks to the vast use of composite materials in the dashboard and internal panels, as well as the use of anatomical seats, produced in carbon fibres, that can be adjusted according to the physical characteristics of the driver (up to now, a feature only available to racing cars). Furthermore, for maximum possible personalization of the interior, the client can chose between different environments and aesthetic solutions. All distinguishable by the particular attention to detail and artisan workmanship: from the contrasting stitches, colour tone and exclusive matchings. The bucket seats are upholstered in Frau flower leather (an exclusive and innovative treatment of the weave, in which the leather is bound to a natural fibre, creating a look of great visual impact).


In analogous fashion to the interior, the same care has been taken in realizing the exteriors: from the alloy wheels to the brake calipers, every detail can be chosen to your particular design, because every Alfa 8C Spider can only look similar to itself. An unmistakable car made to measure for the owner's personality. The unique and un-repeatable Alfa 8C Spider announces the pleasure of a sporty drive with full respect for the brand's legacy.


Like in the best Alfa Romeo tradition, hidden under this pretty “dress” is the best of what's available in the field of mechanics and propulsions. Firstly, the Alfa 8C Spider has a rigid and light structure (the compact frame is made in steel for maximum torsion to guarantee a drive which is always precise and sure, whilst the body is in carbon fibre). We are dealing with a choice motivated by the need to reduce as much as possible the weight but also to optimize the centre of gravity for agility and drive-ability in the more demanding journeys.


Still under the banner of sophisticated technology, the Alfa 8C Spider adopts the new “8 cylinder mated to a 5-speed gearbox with 90°” and a capacity of 4691 cm3 which has been designed with one specific aim: guarantee extraordinary performances without relinquishing the fluidity of the gearshift or the ease of use in any driving context. Like so, a powerful and progressive propulsion is born with a top power of 450 CV at 7.000 rpm and a maximum torque of 7.500 rpm. This engine has been mated to a self-shifting 6-speed gearshift (with computerized selection of the gears via levers behind the steering-wheel), and a self-blocking differential unit.
As in the legendary Formula 1 vehicles from the 50's, the Alfa 8C Spider sports the Transaxle design which guarantees the best equilibrium in the partioning of weight. The propulsion is placed in the rear whilst the gearshift is placed behind along the differential and hydraulic motor unit. The Transaxle design foresees a tight connection between motor and gearshift, which is fitted with a self-blocking differential. The two groups are linked by a tubular element, at the interior of which rotates the transmission driving shaft: in this manner the load is distributed in an optimal manner between the front and rear suspension.


So much power can only be entrusted to an excellent braking system: the Alfa 8C Spider is fitted with carbo-ceramic Brembo (CCM), 380 mm in diameter on the front-wheels and 360 mm on the back-wheels. This solution guarantees a powerful brake action even in the most intense uses. The marked reduction in weight, in comparison to a traditional set-up, reduces the masses unsupported by the vehicle and so improves the dynamic performance and driving comfort. Furthermore, the mono-block calipers guarantee maximum rigidity and minimal deformation, given the high loads generated by the pressure of the pistons on the brake-linings.
Therefore, the Alfa 8C Spider “declares itself Alfa” all the way, confirming control and driving pleasure with no compromises. Since always, gear comfort and dynamic performance are qualities specific to Alfa Romeo cars: in this case they have become veritable strong points. Thanks to for example, the suspensions which foresee a high wishbone suspension with brackets and uprights in forged aluminium, that act as a supplementary strut for alignment control.


Contributing also to the brilliant road control are specially developed 20” tyres to insure excellent performance, the tyres have a: 245/35 front-suspension and a rear-suspension of 285/35. Fitted on perforated rims in fluid moulded aluminium to ensure lightness and maximum brake ventilation efficiency. Lastly, the Alfa 8C Spider uses an evolved VDC Alfa Romeo traction and stability system, which ensures the driver feels at one with his car.

Alfa Romeo Spider by Novitec

Novitec has added some finishing touches to the new Alfa Romeo Spider, just in time for the cabrio season. The open two-seater was voted Cabrio of the Year 2006 after its launch at the Geneva Motor Show that year.

Novitec has designed a new front bumper and rear diffuser to underline the aerodynamics and to make it stand out from the factory spec Spiders. Novitec also bolted on a new stainless steel rear silencer accentuating the sound, while the four tailpipes (115x85 mm ovals) add some aggressiveness to the back end.

Novitec also supplies some new footwear for the Alfa Spider, 20 inch N9 multi-piece rims wrapped in Pirelli 255/30R20 rubber while the suspension, adjustable in height from 35 mm to 75 mm and ride stiffness, ensures optimum grip.
