Like a number of recent General Motors concepts -- such as the Chevrolet Aveo RS concept and Chevrolet Cruze hatchback -- the Opel Zafira Tourer concept is very close to the next-generation production Zafira. According to Opel, inspiration for the design came from high-speed trains, but we see a lot of familial Opel in the exterior. The front fascia, with hockey-stick headlights, is pulled from the Opel Ampera, and the upwards sweeping character running between wheel wells is straight off the new Opel Astra.
These familial design cues help to bring the Zafira's design into the modern era, giving it a much more svelte and sporty appearance than its predecessor. The traditional single-box "monocab" design is retained though. Also familiar is GM's turbocharged, direct-injected, 1.4-liter I-4 powering the concept. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, further hinting at the concept's production readiness.
Passengers are treated to a sumptuous, lounge-style interior covered in caramel leather with cocoa-brown accents. The concept behind the interior's design was to create an inviting space for passengers to relax on long journeys -- the outer seats in the second-row bench even have extending footrests. The backs of the front seats have a compartment to hold an iPad, allowing rear seat passengers to surf the internet, watch videos, or listen to music.
The Zafira Tourer Concept is full of trick features, including headrests that rotate 90 degrees into either a horizontal or vertical position for increased occupant comfort. All of the passengers are treated to a full view of the sky with an all-glass roof. A secondary pane within the roof glass is embedded with metallic flakes reflects light from the LED border to help add to the lounge ambience.
While the Zafira Tourer Concept's focus is on the rear seat passengers, the driver and front seat passenger aren't left wanting. The user interface and instrument panel are logically and beautifully laid out. A large touchscreen controls the navigation, radio, and infotainment system, while two small rotary dials below control the HVAC. A large glovebox in front of the passenger allows for stowage of a third iPad, keeping all passengers entertained no matter how long the travels.
Look for the Opel Zafira Concept to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week, and for a production vehicle within the next year judging by GM's recent concept to
